Screenshot API Alternatives

Alternatives to screenshot APIs, OG image tools, PDF APIs and headless browser libraries, with honest notes on when each option is the better fit.

By Simon Chiu · Updated

This section collects our "alternative to X" pages. Each page takes one tool you may already use and puts it next to RenderScreenshot: what maps one to one, what does not, what it costs, and how to move over.

Disclosure: We build RenderScreenshot. Every alternative page says when the other tool is the better choice, and every claim about another product links to its own docs or pricing page.

The four groups

The pages fall into four groups. Start with the group that matches what you run today:

  • Hosted screenshot APIs. Other services that take a URL and return an image. The question is fit: parameters, response shape, caching and price at your volume.
  • OG image and social card tools. Template services and libraries that make 1200×630 share images. RenderScreenshot renders any HTML with the og_card preset, so your template stays in your own code.
  • HTML to PDF APIs. Services and command-line tools that turn HTML into documents. See the PDF parameters for what we support.
  • Open-source libraries. Puppeteer, Playwright and similar tools that you host yourself. Here the trade is control against the work of running browsers. Our posts on scaling Puppeteer and timeouts and memory leaks show that work in detail.

How to choose

If you do not have a specific tool to replace, read the screenshot API comparison first. Then use the scored checklist for choosing a screenshot API to test your shortlist on your own URLs. A small test fits in the free plan: get a free API key, no credit card needed.
