LangChain Screenshot Tool (Python and JS)

A LangChain and LangGraph screenshot tool that returns image content blocks to the model and keeps capture metadata as an artifact. Tested in Python and JS.

By Simon Chiu · Updated

A LangChain tool can return more than a string. With response_format="content_and_artifact", it returns two things: image content for the model, and an artifact for your code (the CDN link, the request ID, the credits used) that never enters the prompt. That split is exactly what a screenshot tool needs. This page has the tool in Python and in JavaScript, both tested inside create_agent, the LangGraph-based agent in LangChain 1.x.

Other frameworks are covered in the screenshot API for AI agents overview.

What you can build

  • A LangGraph research agent that reads pages as text with a loader, and captures them when the answer is in a chart or an image.
  • A QA graph with a capture node that runs after each deploy and a judge node that compares captures with expected copy.
  • A support assistant that opens the customer's page, sees the error they describe, and stores the capture link on the ticket from the artifact.

Prerequisites

  • Python 3.10+: pip install langchain langchain-anthropic httpx (tested with langchain 1.4.6, langchain-core 1.6.10, langchain-anthropic 1.7.6, langgraph 1.2.15)
  • or Node 20+: npm i langchain @langchain/anthropic @langchain/core zod (tested with langchain 1.5.16, @langchain/core 1.2.17, @langchain/anthropic 1.5.12, zod 4.6.7)
  • ANTHROPIC_API_KEY and RS_API_KEY (free RenderScreenshot key)

JavaScript

Save as langchain-screenshot-tool.mjs. The schema is a zod object; the tool returns a [content, artifact] pair:

const agent = createAgent({

});

const question = process.argv[2] ?? 'Describe https://example.com in one sentence.';
const state = await agent.invoke({ messages: [{ role: 'user', content: question }] });

console.log(state.messages.at(-1).text);

Note the small naming difference between the two languages: Python image blocks use base64 and mime_type; JavaScript uses data and mimeType.

Test record. Both files were run on 2026-10-15 (Python 3.14, Node 22.18.0) with the package versions listed above. RS_BASE_URL pointed at a local mock of /v1/screenshot, and the Anthropic client pointed at a local mock of /v1/messages (ANTHROPIC_API_URL) that requested the tool once and then answered. In both languages, the request that ChatAnthropic sent after the tool ran contained a Claude tool_result with an image block (base64, media_type from the screenshot response) and a text block. The artifact printed with the cache URL and request ID, and it did not appear anywhere in the model request. We did not call the live Claude API.

Why content and artifact

Goes to the model (content) Stays in your app (artifact)
The image, about 1,334 tokens on Claude at 1280x800 X-Cache-URL: public CDN link for reports and tickets
One line of text naming the URL X-Request-Id: for support and logs
X-Credits-Used: to track spend per run

Putting the CDN link in the model's content is tempting, but it costs tokens on every later turn and models sometimes alter long URLs when they repeat them. Keep it in the artifact and render it yourself. In LangGraph, the artifact sits on the ToolMessage in state, so any later node (a reporter, a Slack notifier) can read it. See response headers for every header you can copy into the artifact.

Parameter mapping

Tool argument RenderScreenshot field Who decides
url url Model
full_page / fullPage capture.mode: "full_page", capture.scroll.max_height: 4000 Model, capped by code
(fixed) viewport: {width: 1280, height: 800} Code
(fixed) output: {format: "jpeg", quality: 80} Code
(fixed) block.cookie_banners: true Code
Add if needed capture.mode: "element" + capture.selector Model picks from selectors you list in the description
Add if needed network.cookies / network.headers for logged-in pages Code only, never the model

Full list: POST /v1/screenshot parameters.

Error handling and retries

  • The tool returns HTTP errors as text content with an empty artifact. The model sees "Screenshot failed: HTTP 422 ..." and can try another URL or report the failure. Error types and the retryable flag are listed in error codes.
  • Exceptions (network down, timeout) propagate out of the tool. In create_agent, add tool error handling middleware or wrap the call in try/except and return text, depending on whether you want the run to stop.
  • Rate limits (429): retry in the tool after the Retry-After header, at most once. A model-driven retry loop wastes turns.
  • Runaway loops: set a recursion limit when you invoke the graph, for example agent.invoke(inputs, {"recursion_limit": 10}), so an agent that keeps capturing stops.

Limits and costs

Each capture uses one RenderScreenshot credit; a graph that captures 5 pages per run and runs 200 times a month uses 1,000 credits (pricing). On the model side, every image stays in the message history and is resent on each later model call in the run. For long graphs, add a node that replaces old image blocks with a one-line summary once they have been used.

Troubleshooting

Symptom Cause Fix
Model gets a long base64 string as text Tool returned a plain str Return content blocks with type: "image"
artifact is None on the ToolMessage response_format not set Use response_format="content_and_artifact" (Python) or responseFormat (JS)
Provider error about tool message content Your chat model does not accept images in tool results Use a model integration that does (we tested ChatAnthropic), or pass the image in a follow-up user message
Image block ignored in JS Used Python key names JS uses data and mimeType
Captures show a consent dialog Banner not blocked Keep block.cookie_banners: true; add page.hide selectors

Frequently asked questions

How does a LangChain tool return an image to the model?
Return a list of content blocks with an image block ({"type": "image", "base64": ..., "mime_type": ...}). With response_format="content_and_artifact", the tool returns a tuple of (content, artifact), and only the content reaches the model.
Does this work in LangGraph?
Yes. create_agent in LangChain 1.x builds a LangGraph graph, and the tool result is stored as a ToolMessage in the graph state, with the artifact attached.
Does every chat model accept images in tool results?
No. Check your provider. We tested ChatAnthropic in Python and JS, which converts the image block into a Claude tool_result image.
