OpenAI Agents SDK Screenshot Tool

Add a website screenshot tool to the OpenAI Agents SDK with function_tool and ToolOutputImage. Tested Python file, Responses API shape and error handling.

By Simon Chiu · Updated

The OpenAI Agents SDK turns a typed Python function into a tool with @function_tool. Since the SDK added ToolOutputImage, that function can return an image the model actually sees. Below is a complete agent with a RenderScreenshot capture tool, tested with openai-agents 0.24.0, plus the raw Responses API shape for teams that call the API without the SDK.

For the same tool in Claude, LangChain and the Vercel AI SDK, see the screenshot API for AI agents overview.

What you can build

  • A page inspector agent that answers "is the new banner live on the pricing page?" by looking.
  • A triage agent that receives a bug report with a URL, captures the page on desktop and mobile, and attaches what it saw to the ticket.
  • A hand-off pattern: a research agent reads pages as text and hands off to a vision agent with this tool when a page is mostly charts or images.

Prerequisites

  • Python 3.10 or later
  • pip install openai-agents httpx (tested with openai-agents 0.24.0, openai 3.31.0, httpx 0.28.1)
  • OPENAI_API_KEY
  • RS_API_KEY starting with rs_live_ (free key)

The complete file

Save as openai_agent_screenshot.py:

"""OpenAI Agents SDK agent with a RenderScreenshot function tool.

Usage: RS_API_KEY=rs_live_... OPENAI_API_KEY=... python openai_agent_screenshot.py "Is the pricing table visible on https://example.com/pricing?"
"""

Test record. Tested on 2026-10-15 with Python 3.14 and the versions above. OPENAI_BASE_URL pointed at a local mock of /v1/responses that first returned a function_call and then a message; RS_BASE_URL pointed at a local mock of /v1/screenshot. We checked the second request to the model: its function_call_output held an input_image item with a data URL and detail: "high", then an input_text item. With the screenshot API unreachable, the model received screenshot_url failed: ConnectError: ... instead of the SDK's generic error. We did not call the live OpenAI API.

What the SDK sends

The SDK builds this tool definition from the type hints and the Google-style docstring:

{
  "type": "function",
  "name": "screenshot_url",
  "description": "Capture a screenshot of a public web page and return it as an image.",
  "strict": true,
  "parameters": {
    "type": "object",
    "additionalProperties": false,
    "required": ["url", "full_page"],
    "properties": {
      "url": { "type": "string", "title": "Url", "description": "Absolute http(s) URL to capture." },
      "full_page": { "type": "boolean", "default": false, "title": "Full Page",
                     "description": "Capture the whole scrollable page (up to 4000 px) instead of the first screen." }
    }
  }
}

Note "required": ["url", "full_page"]. Strict mode requires every property, even ones with a default. That is expected: the model sends false when it does not need the full page. If you want truly optional inputs, pass strict_mode=False to @function_tool, and accept that the model may then send malformed arguments.

After the tool runs, the next request carries the image back as part of the function output:

{
  "type": "function_call_output",
  "call_id": "call_1",
  "output": [
    { "type": "input_image", "image_url": "data:image/jpeg;base64,/9j/4AAQ...", "detail": "high" },
    { "type": "input_text", "text": "Public image URL: https://cdn.renderscreenshot.com/..." }
  ]
}

This is also the shape to use if you call the Responses API directly with function calling and no SDK: run the function yourself, then send a function_call_output item whose output is that list.

Parameter mapping

Function argument RenderScreenshot request field Notes
url: str url Validate the host in code if the agent should only see your sites
full_page: bool capture.mode: "full_page" + capture.scroll.max_height: 4000 Height cap keeps the image readable after the model downscales it
(fixed) viewport: {width: 1280, height: 800} A good fit for vision models; see vision capture settings
(fixed) output: {format: "jpeg", quality: 80} Smaller upload than PNG at the same token cost
(fixed) block.cookie_banners: true Keeps consent dialogs off the content
(fixed) wait: {until: "networkidle", timeout: 30} timeout is in seconds, max 60; see wait options
ToolOutputImage.detail (model side) "high" for reading text; "low" for a cheap glance at layout

Error handling and retries

There are three layers, and each one should handle different failures:

  1. HTTP errors from the screenshot API (401, 403, 422, 429). The function returns them as ToolOutputText. A 422 target_error (page timed out, navigation failed) is useful for the model; it can try a different URL or report the page as down. See error codes.
  2. Exceptions (DNS failure, connection reset). failure_error_function=tool_error turns them into a readable message. Without it, the model only sees "An error occurred while running the tool. Please try again." and often retries blindly.
  3. Slow tools. timeout=90 on @function_tool bounds the tool call. The httpx timeout of 60 seconds fires first in normal cases; the SDK timeout is the backstop.

For 429 rate_limit_error, retry in code after the Retry-After header rather than asking the model to retry. The model has no clock, and each retry costs a turn. max_turns=6 on Runner.run stops a loop that keeps capturing.

Limits and costs

  • Credits: one RenderScreenshot credit per capture. An agent that captures 3 pages per question and answers 300 questions a month uses about 900 credits; see pricing.
  • Model tokens: OpenAI bills image input by patches or tiles depending on the model and the detail setting. A 1280x800 image stays well inside the size limits of current models. Check the vision guide for your model before you change the viewport.
  • Request size: a 1280x800 JPEG at quality 80 was 43 to 184 KB across the 26 pages in our token study (median 95 KB), a third more as base64. Every later turn resends it. Long runs should prefer the public X-Cache-URL as image_url once the image no longer needs to be private.
  • Tracing: the SDK uploads traces to OpenAI by default. Set OPENAI_AGENTS_DISABLE_TRACING=1 or call set_tracing_disabled(True) if screenshots of internal pages must not leave your systems.

Troubleshooting

Symptom Cause Fix
Model answers without looking Instructions do not require the tool Say "call screenshot_url before you describe a page"
Model says it received text, not an image Function returns a base64 string Return ToolOutputImage, not a str
"An error occurred while running the tool" Default failure handler Add failure_error_function
full_page always sent Strict mode requires all properties Expected; or set strict_mode=False
Blank or half-loaded page SPA still loading Keep wait.until: "networkidle"; add wait.for_selector for a known element
Run ends with max turns error Model keeps calling the tool Lower the number of pages per question; keep max_turns

Frequently asked questions

Can an OpenAI function tool return an image?
Yes. In the Agents SDK, return ToolOutputImage (with a data URL, a public URL or a file_id). In the raw Responses API, the function_call_output can be a list that contains input_image items.
Why is my optional parameter listed as required in the tool schema?
The Agents SDK uses strict mode by default. Strict JSON schemas list every property as required, and the default value is kept in the schema. The model sends the default when it has no reason to change it.
Does the agent see why a tool failed?
Not by default. The SDK replaces an exception with a generic message. Pass failure_error_function to send the real cause.
